Golden Globe Winners are Now Oscars Frontrunners

Golden Globe winners for the motion picture category are “The Artist” and “The Descendants.”

The French romance film “The Artist” tops this year’s Golden Globe film winners for bagging the Golden Globe Best Picture for Musical/Comedy category. It also nabbed a best actor for musical/comedy trophy for Jean Dujardin and a nod for best musical score.

The Artist is a film Michel Hazanavicius, which takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. Most of the film itself is silent; it is shown in black-and-white, and has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. The film debuted at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival where its male star Dujardin won the Best Actor Award.

Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” on the other hand, won the Best Picture Drama and a Best Actor for Drama courtesy of George Clooney.

The Descendants is a film based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Shailene Woodley, and was directed by Alexander Payne, with a screenplay by Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. The film premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Despite the wins for Best Picture and Best Actor, both “The Artist” and “The Descendant” lost the Best Director award to Martin Scorsese (for “Hugo”).

“The Descendants” won in the drama category, and took a best actor award for George Clooney, where he topped his buddie Brad Pitt. The two will compete against Dujardin for a fairly contested best actor Oscar.

Meanwhile, the Best Actress Drama trophy went to Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”) and the Best Actress Comedy/Musical was given to Michelle Williams (“My Week with Marilyn”).

The Best Supporting Actor winner was Christopher Plummer for “Beginners” and the Best Supporting Actress trophy went to
Octavia Spencer for “The Help.”

Based on the results of the 69th Golden Globe Awards, we can expect the 2012 Oscars to be contested by the films “The Artist,” “The Descendant,” “The Help,” “The Iron Lady,” “Midnight in Paris” and “My Week with Marilyn.”

The frontrunner for Best Animated Film would be “The Adventures of Tintin” while a shoo-in for Best Foreign Language Film is Iran’s “A Separation.”
