$35 tablet computer called the “Aakash” was launched in India and it’s the cheapest touched screen tablet computer in the world.

The $35 tablet computer is the latest in a series of “world’s cheapest” innovations in India following the $2,040 compact Nano car, the $15 water purifier and $2,000 for open-heart surgery.

Compared to Apple iPad which costs around $365 the “Aakash” tablet computer costs less than 10% of that amount and the company is planning to beat that and hoping to come up with a $10 tablet in the future!

India’s minister for human resources development Kapil Sibal handed out 500 Aakash tablets to a group of students during the gadget’s press launch.

The Aakash was manufactured by UK-based company DataWind and Indian Institute of Technology (Rajasthan), and it can be used for functions like word processing, web browsing and video conferencing. It has a 7-inch touch screen, 256 megabytes of RAM, Android 2.2 OS, a pair of USB ports, and has a three-hour battery life.

Sibal revealed that the government will make a pilot run of 100,000 Aakash tablet computers to be distributed to students in small towns and villages. He also made a statement that the $35 tablet computer is for all those who are marginalized.

“The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide,” he said.

India is aiming to get its 220 million children online and Datawind said they can only manufacture 100,000 a month. So it will take years to fulfill that vision.
