$35 tablet computer called “Aakash” was launched in India and it’s the cheapest touched screen tablet computer in the world.
Compared to Apple iPad which costs around $365 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet which sells at around $199, the “Aakash” has a price too hard to resist.
India’s minister for human resources development Kapil Sibal handet out 500 Aakash tablets to a group of students during the gadget’s press launch.
The Aakash was manufactured by UK-based company DataWind and Indian Institute of Technology (Rajasthan), and it can be used for functions like word processing, web browsing and video conferencing. It has a 7-inch touch screen, 256 megabytes of RAM, Android 2.2 OS, a pair of USB ports, and has a three-hour battery life.
Sibal revealed that the government will make a pilot run of 100,000 Aakash tablet computers to be distributed to students in small towns and villages.
“The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide,” he said.
