RP gets top marks on climate change in Bonn

The Philippines received top marks from the United Kingdom-based environmental non-government organization Friends of the Earth International for boldly calling on rich industrialized countries to set higher greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

The NGO honored the country at the recently-concluded climate change negotiations in Bonn, Germany.

In a witty attempt to portray the recent climate talks as a classroom session with nations as pupils, the youth component of Friends of the Earth International published a “School Report on Leadership” which assessed performance of participating countries in this critical event leading to the key climate change conference in Copenhagen this December.

Alongside India and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), the Philippines ranked first in a list of 11 “pupils” or participating countries and named in the report as an “excellent math student” who, throughout the duration of the talks, gave “guidance to failing classmates that only higher reduction targets for rich industrialized nations will keep us below a 1.5ºC increase.”

The Philippines’ success in the international climate change talks comes at the heels of the successful two-day High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change in Asia Pacific organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), attended by top environment stakeholders and keynoted by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
